11 – How to be Saved

1. The Bible doesn’t have a “sinners prayer” in it anywhere

2. The Bible never speaks of “accepting Jesus into your heart”

4. Who does the saving?

4.1. Jesus does the saving

4.1.1. John 5:21-23 …the Son gives life to whomever he wishes. The Father judges no one but has given all judgment to the Son, so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father

4.1.2. John 17:1-2 Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all people, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him.

4.1.3. Matthew 28:18 All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

4.1.4. 2 Timothy 1:9 who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began

4.1.5. Acts 4:12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.

4.1.6. John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

4.1.7. John. 10:9 I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.

4.2. Jesus wants to save

4.2.1. Titus 3:5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit

4.2.2. 1 Timothy 2:4 says that God “desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”

4.2.3. 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

4.2.4. Ezekiel 18:32 For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent and live!

5. On what basis does he do this saving?

5.1. Jesus save’s His own kingdom

5.1.1. Matthew 19:24-25 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” 25 When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?”

5.1.2. Acts 16:30-31 30 Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

5.1.3. Romans 6:23 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

5.1.4. Ephesians 2:8-9 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

5.1.5. 1 Corinthians 15:1-2 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain

5.2. What’s my part? – Repent and have Faith Toward God

5.3. Repentance

5.3.1. The First Step of Salvation

5.3.1.1. Nacham (Heb. “to breath heavily; to sigh;” by implication, “to be sorry”)

5.3.1.2. Shoob (Heb. “to return, to turn back”)

5.3.1.3. Metanoia (Gr. “to think afterward;” by implication, “to change the mind”)

5.3.2. Repentance is Mandatory

5.3.2.1. Acts 2:38 38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit

5.3.2.2. Acts 3:19 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.

5.3.2.3. Acts 20:21 testifying to Jews, and also to Greeks, repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

5.3.2.4. Acts 17:30 30 Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, 31 because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.”

5.3.2.5. Luke 13:3,5 3 I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. 5 I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.”

5.3.2.6. Isaiah 55:7 7 Let the wicked forsake his way, And the unrighteous man his thoughts; Let him return to the Lord, And He will have mercy on him; And to our God, For He will abundantly pardon.

5.3.3. There’s no “sorta” repentant

5.3.3.1. 2 Corinthians 7:10 10 For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.

6. What does genuine repentance look like?

6.1. Luke 15:17-19 17 “But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! 18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, 19 and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.” ’

6.2. Luke 15:24-25 24 for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ And they began to be merry. 25 “Now his older son was in the field. And as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing

6.3. Starts with Confession

6.3.1. 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

6.3.2. Proverbs 28:13 Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.

6.4. Followed by a desire to make it right

6.4.1. Luke 19: 8-9 8 Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold.” 9 And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; 10 for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

6.4.2. James 4:7–8 7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

6.5. Followed by changed living

6.5.1. Ephesians 4:22-24 22 that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, 23 and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.

6.5.2. Luke 22:42 42 saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.”

6.5.3. 1 John 5:4 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.

8. Believe – Have Faith Toward God

8.1. Belief in God alone isn’t enough

8.1.1. James 2:19You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!

8.2. We have to not just believe in God, but we have to believe in God’s faithfulness and character.

8.2.1. Hebrews 11:66 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

8.2.2. Hebrews 11:1111 By faith Sarah herself also received strength to conceive seed, and she[d] bore a child when she was past the age, because she judged Him faithful who had promised.

8.2.3. Hebrews 1:1Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

8.2.4. Hebrews 1:3 3 By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.

8.2.5. 1 John 5:9 9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater; for this is the witness of God which He has testified of His Son.

8.2.6. Romans 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

8.3. Faith is what Justifies

8.3.1. Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.

8.3.2. Galatians 5:6 6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love.

8.3.3. James 2:14 14 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him?

9. What does it cost? Everything and nothing at all

9.1. Romans 10:9-10 9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

9.2. Simple but not easy

9.2.1. Matthew 7:13-14 13 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.

9.2.2. 1 Corinthians 2:5 so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God.

10.Walking by Faith

10.1. Romans 1:17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”

10.2. Romans 15:13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

10.3. Walking by faith is an act of Obedience

10.3.1. Hebrews 11:44 By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it he being dead still speaks.

10.3.2. Hebrews 11:7 7 By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.

10.3.3. Hebrews 11:8 8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.

10.3.4. Hebrews 11:17 17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,

10.3.5. John 3:36 He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him

10.4. Walking by Faith is an act of Vision

10.4.1. 1 Peter1:7-8 that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, 8 whom having not [d]seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory

10.5. Walking by Faith requires Divine help

10.5.1. Hebrews 11:32-3432 And what more shall I say? For the time would fail me to tell of Gideon and Barak and Samson and Jephthah, also of David and Samuel and the prophets: 33 who through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, 34 quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.

10.5.2. John 11:40 40 Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?”

10.5.3. Mark 16:17-1817 And these signs will follow those who [d]believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they[e] will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

10.5.4. James 1:5-7 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord;

11.Faith is an action word

11.1. James 2:26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.

11.2. Hebrews 6:1 Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God.

11.3. Mark 11:22 And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God”

11.4. Surrender your will

11.4.1. John 14:15 15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments.

11.4.2. 1 John 2:3-5 3 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God [a]is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him.

11.4.3. Galatians 5:14 14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

11.4.4. Luke 10:25-28 25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?” 27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” 28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”

11.5. Surrender your rights

11.5.1. Luke 18:18-23 18 Now a certain ruler asked Him, saying, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 19 So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. 20 You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ ‘Honor your father and your mother.’ ” 21 And he said, “All these things I have kept from my youth.” 22 So when Jesus heard these things, He said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” 23 But when he heard this, he became very sorrowful, for he was very rich.

11.6. Surrender your very life

11.6.1. Mark 8:35 35 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it.

11.6.2. 1 John 4:7-8 7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 8 He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
